The article analyzes the processes of acquittal and rehabilitation of the victims of the “Cotton Affair” in Surkhandarya Oblast in the late 1980s and on the eve of Uzbekistan’s independence. The study focuses on violations of legality in Soviet investigative and judicial practice, the review of criminal cases in 1989–1991, the restoration of the rights of unjustly convicted persons, and the socio-moral significance of rehabilitation.
