This article covers the history of the formation and development of handicrafts in the Surkhandarya oasis. The stages of development of such crafts as pottery, jewelry, embroidery, carpet weaving, blacksmithing, and woodcarving, which have existed in the region since ancient times, are analyzed. The place of the Surkhandarya oasis in the Great Silk Road system, the impact of handicrafts on the lifestyle of the local population, and the state policy and reforms aimed at developing the industry during the years of independence are also scientifically covered.
