THE ROLE OF QIRĀʾĀT IMAMS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCIENCE OF QIRĀʾĀT

This article examines the role of the imams ofqira at in the formation and development of the science of Qur ’anic readings. It analyzes the historical transition from the seven canonical readings to the system often qira‘at, highlighting the methodological principles and scholarly motivations behind their standardization. The study also clarifies the conceptual distinctions between qira ’a, riwaya, and fariq, and outlines the criteria for the acceptance of sound readings, including reliable chains of transmission (isnad), conformity with the 'Uthmdnic codex, and compliance with Arabic grammatical norms. Drawing on classical sources, the article explores the scholarly legacy of the ten imams of qira at and their enduring contribution to the preservation and transmission of the Qur ’anic text.
