UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTION OF DISCOURSE MARKERS IN LANGUAGE USE

Discourse markers are important linguistic elements that contribute to coherence, cohesion, and pragmatic meaning in communication. This study examines the functions of discourse markers in spoken and written English discourse using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected from academic articles, essays, conversational transcripts, and interviews. A total of 150 discourse markers were identified and classified into additive, contrastive, causal, sequential, and interactive categories. The findings show that additive markers were the most frequently used, followed by contrastive and causal markers. The study highlights the role of discourse markers in organizing discourse, guiding interpretation, and facilitating communication. It also emphasizes the need for explicit instruction to help second-language learners use discourse markers effectively and improve communicative competence.
