THE SYSTEM OF MOTIFS AND THEIR LITERARY FUNCTIONS IN CHO‘LPON’S NOVEL NIGHT AND DAY

This article analyzes Cho‘lpon’s novel Night and Day through a motifological approach, identifying the hierarchy of recurring structural-semantic units in the work, their syntagmatic development, and their paradigmatic relationships. In this study, a motif is not equated with a theme, image, symbol, or isolated artistic detail; its status is determined according to the criteria of recurrence, stability of the semantic core, contextual consistency, and plot-compositional activity. The analysis demonstrates that the novel’s overarching leitmotif is not the antonymic pair “night–day” itself, but rather an incomplete movement from a state of social and moral “night” toward personal and national awakening. This leitmotif is realized through the submotifs of enclosed space–freedom, desire–conscience, power–justice, woman–object, ritual–control, colonial oppression–an awakening people, and darkness–an enlightened future. The study further examines the transformation of motifs within the plotlines of Zebi and Miryoqub, the petition–bribe–newspaper sequence, the dual function of ethnocultural motifs, and the role of the motifs of war, labor conscription, rebellion, imprisonment, and trial in linking private tragedy to historical crisis.
