DEFINITION AND USAGE OF EUPHEMISMS

This article describes the definition of euphemisms and its application in speech. It is common to use terms that are soft, vague, and often indirect to avoid expressions that are considered harsh, insulting, or inappropriate. There are some events in every society that are unpleasant to discuss, but it is inevitable to address sensitive issues from time to time. Because of this, many communication strategies have changed the way people engage in uncomfortable topics. Traditionally, this set of discursive methods is called euphemism. The analytical part of this work focuses on the application of euphemisms in America and Britain. The main focus of this article is to explore the definition of euphemism and its application in public discourse, i.e., its softened latent form, without directly expressing it on certain topics, such as death, religions, or other sensitive topics. Descriptive and analytical methods are used in this article.
