THE APPEARANCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE MANAQIB GENRE

Abstract
The article defines the genre of «manaqib», which is found in Arabic, Turkish and Persian literature, in a broad sense including «biographical works of a laudatory nature», and in which special attention is paid to the merits, virtues and outstanding deeds of the person concerned and, in particular, the lives of (biographies of saints). The main purpose of such works «is to offer the reader a moral portrait and information about the noble actions of the people that make up their subject, or about the highest virtues of a particular group». Such works are valuable sources for the socio-political and religious history of early and medieval Islam.
