COMPLEMENTARITY OF RUSSIAN AND UZBEK FOOD EXPORTS IN CENTRAL ASIA

The purpose of the article is to determine whether the leading agri-food export niches of Russia and Uzbekistan form a complementary supply structure in the Central Asian market. The study is limited to two groups: Russian staple commodities (wheat, vegetable oil, sugar, and poultry meat) and Uzbek fruit and vegetable products (grapes, dried fruits, vegetables, and fruits). The study employs comparative statistical analysis, calculation of the supplier’s share in the total imports of the target market, the average export value per tonne, and the degree of realization of export potential. The information base comprises data for 2024–2025 from the National Statistics Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, FAO, the Federal Centre “Agroexport”, ITC Trade Map, UN Comtrade, and Export Potential Map. The findings show that Russia has a significant presence in the sugar (64%), poultry meat (41.6%), and vegetable oil (34%) segments, while Uzbekistan holds notable positions in fresh grapes (41%) and dried fruits (35%). In 2025, the value of Uzbekistan’s fruit and vegetable exports increased faster than their physical volume, raising the average export value per tonne by approximately 28.9%. The results confirm asymmetric complementarity: Russia supports the year-round availability of staple foods, while Uzbekistan expands the seasonal assortment and supply of products with a high value per unit of land area. At the same time, substantial untapped potential has been identified for Russian wheat and sunflower oil, as well as Uzbek grapes and dried fruits. Realizing this potential requires the development of cold-chain infrastructure, processing, and packaging in Uzbekistan, along with lower transportation costs and greater stability in the supply of bulk commodities from Russia.
