Abstract

Adolescence is a unique stage in human development during which boys and girls are just beginning their journey to find their identity and become independent and self-sufficient adults. It is a critical period for the development of social and emotional habits important to mental and emotional well-being. Rapid physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial development affects how adolescents think, feel, and interact with external and internal environments. Globally, it is estimated that one in seven adolescents (ages 10 to 19) has a mental health disorder; depression, anxiety, and conduct disorders lead the way.
