This study investigates the changes in cognitive and affective functions in patients with generalized epilepsy, with a particular focus on the therapeutic effects of lacosamide. A total of 100 patients were enrolled and divided into three groups based on the duration of epilepsy. Cognitive functions were assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), while affective symptoms, particularly depression, were evaluated with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). The findings revealed that patients receiving lacosamide showed better cognitive performance and lower levels of depressive symptoms compared to those not on lacosamide. Although longer disease duration was associated with greater cognitive and affective decline, lacosamide significantly mitigated these effects. These results highlight lacosamide’s potential not only in reducing seizure frequency but also in improving neuropsychological well-being, emphasizing the need for comprehensive clinical approaches in managing generalized epilepsy.
