EFFECT OF RELATIVE MARRIAGES ON THE RISK OF INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY IN CHILDREN

Intellectual disability is one of the urgent medical and social problems of modern society, having a significant impact on the quality of life of patients and their families. Genetic factors, including related marriages, play a significant role in its etiology causes. The purpose of this review is to analyze current scientific data on the impact of related marriages on the risk of developing intellectual disability in offspring. The article examines the main genetic mechanisms, including autosomal recessive inheritance, presents epidemiological data from populations with high rates of related marriages, and analyzes the social and cultural aspects of this problem. Particular attention was paid on the issues of prevention and the role of genetic counseling. The review results confirm that consanguineous marriages are associated with an increased risk of intellectual disability, emphasizing the need to develop preventive programs and improve the population's genetic literacy.
