COGNITIVE AND PSYCHOEMOTIONAL IMPAIRMENTS AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN PATIENTS WITH DRUG-RESISTANT EPILEPSY

Drug-resistant epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which persistent epileptic seizures exert a multifactorial impact not only on neurological status but also on cognitive functions, psychoemotional state, social adaptation, and patients’ quality of life. A prospective clinical and functional study was conducted and included 84 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Seizure frequency, disease duration, type of antiseizure therapy, number of prescribed medications, cognitive status according to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, anxiety and depression according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, quality of life according to the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31, and daytime sleepiness according to the Epworth Sleepiness Scale were assessed. High seizure frequency, disease duration of more than 10 years, and the use of three or more antiseizure medications were found to be associated with lower MoCA scores, higher HADS scores, and poorer QOLIE-31 results. The most pronounced reduction in quality of life was observed in patients with frequent seizures, anxiety-depressive symptoms, and daytime sleepiness. The findings emphasize the need to include neuropsychological and psychoemotional assessment in the standard comprehensive evaluation of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.
