The article analyzes scientific approaches and proposals for the preservation of the Aral Sea in the 1960s-1980s. It examines alarming warnings from scientists about the catastrophic environmental consequences caused by human impact on the region's water balance. Despite proposals for the rational use of water resources and ecosystem restoration, government bodies disregarded these recommendations, leading to further deterioration of the situation. Special attention is given to the efforts of Karakalpakstan scientists who, despite political obstacles, attempted to draw the authorities' attention to the problem.
