Objective. To evaluate the antifibrotic efficacy of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na-CMC)-based hydrogel in experimental antiglaucomatous surgery using immunohistochemical (IHC) markers Ki-67 and desmin. Materials and Methods. The experiment was conducted on 36 rabbits (72 eyes) divided into three groups: control (no barrier material), comparative (Omnivisc viscoelastic), and experimental (Na-CMC hydrogel). Histological and IHC examinations were performed at designated time points following deep sinus trabeculoiridectomy. Expression levels of Ki-67 and desmin were used to assess cellular proliferation and myofibroblastic transformation. Results. In the control group, high expression levels of Ki-67 and desmin (up to 67%) indicated active fibrotic processes. The application of Na-CMC hydrogel significantly reduced the expression of both markers to near-physiological levels (Ki-67: 20.0±2.0%; desmin: 12.5±1.5%), suggesting effective suppression of inflammatory and fibrotic activity. Conclusion. Na-CMC hydrogel demonstrates a pronounced antifibrotic effect and may serve as a safe alternative to toxic antifibrotic agents in glaucoma surgery.
